Greece, for many years was known for having a serious fleet of wooden fishing boats. A whole tradition lied behind those boats. Special craftsmen have produced amazing boats being used for small range fishing. However a few years ago (mid 2000s) the Greek government together with the EU decided to introduce a law by which the fishermen could get a serious amount of money if they destroyed their boats.
The reason behind that was to diminish the fishing capabilities in order to protect the sea life, however the result was that the bigger steel or plastic boats are now fishing more freely, destroying a lot more of the sea life… Additionally, many traditional wooden boats have been destroyed.
The above examples from the island of Chios.
